Apparently it’s a simple gray ring, but it’s built in titanium, has a diamond outer cover and has an advanced measuring system inside. It is the Oura Ring, an exclusive wearable of Finnish origin that has managed to attract the attention of various millionaires; from Larry Page (Google), Steve Chen (Youtube), Kevin Lin (Twitch), athletes like Shaquille O’Neal or actors like Will Smith.
What’s this ring for? What do you have for these personalities to use? It is a device to monitor sleep. Usually it is the bracelets and watches that have this function, but Oura offers in a more minimalist design the same function, in addition with its own measurement algorithms.
Oura Ring, an exclusive tracker to monitor sleep
Ease of use is the feature that its users highlight most. The first generation of the Oura Ring was slightly larger, but in 2018 they launched a new model with more battery, precision and a more minimalist design, hardly distinguishable with the naked eye of a normal ring.
As user AudeldScire points out, Larry Page, one of Google’s co-founders, has recently seen himself carrying a Oura Ring in his left hand. Alphabet’s now ex-CEO is not among the company’s investor list, but he is seen betting on this ring that has a price of $299 in its black or silver version or up to $999 in the diamond version.
The ring has wireless charging and a one-week battery life, and is also water-resistant and has enough memory to store “up to 6 weeks of data”.
Just like Fitbit, Oura has a dedicated app where users can get tips to improve their sleep, with recommendations from professional athletes and a medical database.
By the end of 2018, Oura announced that they were already available in 100 countries and had secured an investment of up to $20 million, with an unknown valuation. Its investors include Michael Dell’s MSD Capital, as well as co-founders of well-known services such as Youtube, Switch, Skype, Box.com, Oak or Soylent.
A round of funding including athletes such as Shaquille O’Neal, Jimmy Johnson, Lance Armstrong and Manu Ginobili who have helped popularize the ring. Oura Ring’s exclusivity is not only based on its price, but also on the low availability to buy it.
Another personal it has made public with Oura Ring is Prince Harry of England, who generated intense debate until People magazine confirmed that this is this “biotracker”, a trend within the wearable sector that it consists of improving physical health through multiple sensors and algorithms such as Oura Ring.
